Wife of US diplomat to meet parents of teenager killed in her UK road accident

The wife of a U.S. intelligence official, Anne Sacoolas, has agreed to meet with the parents of a teenager killed in a road accident Sacoolas is accused of being responsible for.

Sacoolas, 42, fled the United Kingdom under diplomatic immunity following an accident in which she was accused of driving on the wrong side of the road. The accident resulted in the death of 19-year-old Harry Dunn, who was driving a motorcycle at the time.

Sacoolas has been criticized globally for her involvement in the accident and her abrupt departure from the U.K., in which she cited diplomatic immunity. But the U.K. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has denied such a status for Sacoolas because of her choice to return to the United States. “The U.K. Government’s position is that immunity, and therefore any question of waiver, is no longer relevant in Mrs. Sacoolas’s case, because she has returned home.”

Sacoolas has expressed regret for the incident and has agreed to meet with the family of Harry Dunn as well as fully cooperate with British authorities. Attorneys for the family have also stated that they expect full cooperation. “The family’s preference now is for a private meeting with Sacoolas to discover what happened and to secure some kind of emotional closure,” they said in a statement Sunday. “It must be a meeting without politicians and spin doctors, a personal meeting with psychological counsellors so the Dunn family can find out what happened in the final moments of their son’s life.”

A statement from Sacoolas’ legal counsel expressed the same. “No loss compares to the death of a child and Anne extends her deepest sympathy to Harry Dunn’s family … She spoke with authorities at the scene of the accident and met with the Northampton police at her home the following day. She will continue to cooperate with the investigation,” the statement read.
